Joining the LAF: What you need to know

The time has come. You want to take that next step in your art journey and you’re looking for ways to level up. Or maybe you’re already pretty established and you just want to join an art fair that won’t cost you an arm and a leg. The Luneta Art Fair may be what you’re looking for. Now on its fourth year, the Luneta Art Fair is ready to take on more artists and art groups to turn Rizal Park Luneta into a bastion for art, at least for one weekend per year.

But is joining the Luneta Art Fair the right move for you? Are you ready for this level of art representation? How would you know if you were ready in the first place? You’ve come to the right article.

1. Do you have enough artworks to sell?

This is a very important question to ask yourself. While the booth fees of the LAF among the lowest you will find (as far as art fairs go), it isn’t exactly cheap. Ask yourself, do you have enough stuff to sell to not only cover the cost of the space, but to cover your other incidental costs? If we’re going to be frank here, you shouldn’t be aiming to break even. Nobody should.

2. Do you have the “right” types of artwork to sell in the LAF?

While we do not want to discriminate against certain types of art merch, we strongly advise against joining the LAF with just stickers and small merch. We’re not saying you shouldn’t have those as part of your product line, but you shouldn’t rely on just those.

The Luneta Art Fair is your opportunity to go beyond stickers and small merch. Think original large-scale paintings, larger digital prints, sculptures and art toys, short-run prints. Basically this is where you cut loose and go big. Trust us, we have the market to support you.

We suggest having a selection of large artworks (sold at the right price, please), then augment those pieces with smaller merch like stickers, postcards, art prints, and the like.

3. Is your portfolio solid enough?

Here at the LAF, we like to accept as many artists as possible, no matter the background or level of experience. With that said, we still do vet the portfolios of those who sign up, and we will let artists know if they qualify or not. We have turned away artists because we felt their body of work was not strong enough yet. We really do hate to do that, but we have the artist’s interest in mind here. Remember, we want you all to succeed, and if that means an extra year or two to develop a stronger art style, then please take that extra year or two.

After reading those three questions and determining that joining the LAF as an exhibitor may not be the right move for now, yet you would still want to join the event, do you have other options? Why yes, yes you do.

You can join the Versus Open Gallery. You’ll only submit a maximum of two works, and we’ll only charge a small commission for every piece sold.
You can join an art group and exhibit with them.
You can get a group of artists and form your own group.
